Maureen Dowd, in a recent op-ed was talking about the adversarial relationship between Hillary and Barack:
"Hillary has a strange, unnerving effect on Obama, and whenever he is around her, he’s unable to do his best. Probably, it’s because she’s furious, always shaking his hand off her arm, ignoring him, giving him the evil eye and emasculating him, and the Golden One is not used to such rough treatment."
Women are very far from being a monolithic block and should not allow politicians or writers of op-ed pieces to treat them as such. Most women are unlike Hillary and Maureen and do not see or treat males in ways designed to emasculate them. Male-female relationships can take many different forms: enduring love, friends, partnerships, mutual support and encouragement, challenging, without being hostile, shared parental responsibilities, alternating sacrifices, specialization of function, and so on. Most women are part of relationships that have these latter characteristics and do not find it necessary to engage always in one up mans ship.
Barack Obama is not in any way and should not be seen as a threat to women and their causes. He, more than either of the other candidates is eager to encourage women to become what they yearn to be and not to be squeezed into mandatory categories to be imposed by anyone else, including other females.
Many women, actually prefer men that are honorable, honest, smart, gentlemanly, articulate, noble, tall and handsome with long ears. If he is good at basketball and pool, so much the better. As Woody Allen would put it, "What's not to like?"
