Hillary Clinton appeared to Identify her predicament in the Presidential Horse Race with "Eight Belles" who was the only Filly running in the Kentucky Derby. She very much wanted "Eight Belles" to win and advised her supporters to bet on the filly (hopefully in across the board bets). She may very well have asked Chelsea who was to be in attendance at the Derby to place a bet in her stead.
Eight Belles was not a favorite (At one point the betting odds were 12:1). The odds on favorite was "Big Brown", a tall handsome colt who was considered very special, but unseasoned. The strong courageous filly ran her heart out against nineteen colts and prevailed over eighteen, she came in second place. Then, mysteriously, without any precipitating event, she collapsed on the track with two identically broken foreleg ankles that somehow had given way on the very same stride. There was no way she could stand. It was decided within minutes that she had to be euthanized.
A tragic, eerie and terribly disturbing turn of events. After the finish of the otherwise festive, and jubilant Kentucky Derby there was a jarring juxtaposition of scenes. The terribly sad sight of "Eight Belles" lying crumpled on the track, in what everyone came to understand was excruciating pain, and seeing those shots alternating with the exuberant celebration and tears of joy evident among those rejoicing for the winner "Big Brown".
As for the Presidential horse race there is a lesson here for the super delegates: Win, Place, and Show bets are not an option.
