Computer Eye Strain - Unintended Consequences

July 5, 2006 / by fixed845inc

I spend a large part of the morning on the computer and had recently noticed that my eyes were feeling differently. Was it an eye problem or a computer eye interactive thing? It is hard to describe, but it was a kind of tension and tiredness. I had been trying to focus out the windows as a way to relax and that helped a bit but not enough. Then I tried limiting myself to two hours a day on my Mac, but the problem continued.

When I googled the words "eye strain" there were multiple articles on the topic of computer eye strain. One of the several contributing factors mentioned was "screen brightness". Voila! After checking, I realized that my brightness setting was at it's absolute highest so I reset it at the opposite end of the brightness scale. Almost immediately I felt the difference and realized that I had been squinting at the screen for hours at a time. No wonder a problem revealed itself.

Going forward I will gradually increase brightness to some moderate most comfortable level. Once again the message has been brought home to me that moderation, especially at my age, is important.
