Suppose for a moment that introducing democracy to the middle east won't work, not now, not ever. What then? Are there no other ideas we are capable of considering? Are we willing to bend, to yield, to compromise or to change?
Just to explore the possibility that there may be alternative strategies I ask you to recall our experiences with dogmatic communism. We had a couple of strategies: Mutually assured destruction: Containment. We did not attempt to preemptively bomb them or they us. We did not try to democratize them. The irony was that we drove them into bankruptcy because they couldn't afford to keep up with us in the arms race. Then when the Soviet Union started to disintegrate they turned to us for help in becoming capitalists. Wasn't that a kick in the head?
All I'm saying is that there well may be alternatives that have a better chance of working even if they are not immediately apparent.
