I've been jogging three miles a day every other day since 1981 and still haven't reached my destination. Many people my age and younger are unable to continue running because of knee and other joint pain. Those with whom I've spoken ran daily until it was no longer possible. The same may well happen to me but I like to believe it is the alternate day schedule that made all the difference. A most wonderful characteristic of the human body is self healing. Exercise, if it is to be of value, puts a degree of physical strain on muscles, joints and tendons. It is strain followed by recuperative rest that leads to growth and repair. It is another example of the human benefits resulting from moderation.

Trying to reduce fatty deposits anywhere in the body is another matter altogether. Here you want to continuously stress those accumulations by daily exercise of that area as well as consistent diet control. You don't want those fat cells to regenerate but to stay depleted.

I have found outdoor running (in contrast to indoor treadmill) year round in New England and everywhere else I've traveled to offer some important advantages. Being out in the changing seasonal climate forces your body to adapt to those changes. Adaptation broadens your capacity to survive and keeps it at the ready. Change is constant, sometimes it evolves slowly and sometimes it can be cataclysmic. Flexibility
can only help.

    I wholeheartedly agree about running outside! I tried a treadmill in a spa for awhile but it was too monotonous and, with the bank of TVs along the ceiling, too much like a boring 9-5 job. Right now it's 35 degrees, snow on the ground, & I'm going out for a jog!!!!
